Geishas and public pubs first arose in Ooedo Japan, where the action takes place. In the past, girls from impoverished, rural households had little prospects of finding a successful marriage. If they wanted a better life, they had to migrate to Ooedo, the city of affluent clans, where they might become servants, geishas, or even lovers for wealthy feudals. Oshizu, a young and destitute orphan, has taken this road.
